Standard one: Know students and how they learn.
Why is standard one important?
It was very important for me as a teacher to create a welcoming classroom with vibrant colours and student work displayed around the classroom so that students can see they are being acknowledged for their work and feel like they belong in the classroom. Building relationships and rapport with the students was very important, because by getting to know students and their interest teachers can build trust in the classroom through showing they are interested in what students have to say and caring about their opinions. By interacting and building that rapport I have developed an effective relationship with all the students in my classroom which made it easier to establish rules routines and procedure because they are important, it creates a community feeling and makes students feel like they belong in the classroom environment. By getting to know the students I know where each student sits in different learning areas for example in maths and English and could group them accordingly.
Action Plan 1: where to from here?
In my future teaching, I will create a classroom where students feel like they belong. I will make the classroom welcoming by using vibrant colours and display student work around the classroom so that they can see they are being acknowledged for their work and feel like they belong in the classroom. Building a relationship and rapport with the students was very important, because by getting to know students and their interest teachers can build a trust in the classroom because you are showing an interest in what they have to say and caring about their opinions. To know all your students is important in the classroom, it is important for a teacher to know linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomical backgrounds in order to communicate effectively with the students and parents/guardians, and also have strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Most importantly I will use a variety of assessment and diagnostic tests to help me understand where my students are which will allow me time to plan and scaffold tasks to suit the higher and lower ability students.
