Standard two: Know the content and how to teach it.
Why is standard two important?
As a graduate teacher it is crucial and necessary that I know the content and understand the content I teach to my students. Without knowledge and understanding of the content learning cannot occur. By knowing the content, I can then plan and scaffold learning for each and every one of my students effectively. I can cater for both lower ability and higher ability students in my classroom by organising students in ability groups and providing appropriate content for the different ability groups. Teachers need to know the content in order to teach and plan effectively and this is where effectively learning and teaching can occur.
Action Plan 2: where to from here?
At the completion of the famous Australian biography unit of work, the students felt exceptionally proud of what they had accomplished in the 10 weeks of work. The essays they wrote were marked and displayed on the work wall in the classroom ready for parents’ night. The parents that came to the open night were very supportive and thought it was a great idea to write about famous Australian, they also liked the idea of doing a class presentation about the famous Australian. The students were every engaged and excited about being filmed. The videos were also put onto Seesaw for parents and guardians to have a look. The comments we received were very positive from the parents and carers of the students.
Throughout my 10 week experience I collected a variety of different marking criteria and units of work by collaborating with other Year 5 teachers in the school, I plan to utilise these resources in my own classroom in the near future.
Moving forward in my career I have the opportunity of working as a relief next term at the same school, and so I plan to collect more resources ready for my own classroom, and collaborate with other teachers around me to get as much experience and resources as possible to improve on my pedagogy. I look forward to the experience and improving my learning on different teaching strategies I can use.
