Standard seven: Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community.
Why is standard seven important?
The need for cultural competency is important especially for a classroom in a country like Australia which is so diverse with a range of different religions and beliefs. Teachers need to be aware and attentive in different situations involving student from diverse backgrounds. Teachers need to know each and every one of their students. They could do this by talking and interacting with the parents and guardians, that is why communication with the wider community is so important. Interacting with the parents, guardians and the wider community is crucial in getting to know the students’ backgrounds, in order to create a better learning environment and better classroom management strategies. Teachers need to connect with aboriginal and international students. They could also do this through trying to learn as much as possible about the cultures, different ways of learning and knowledge systems.

Action Plan 7: where to from here?
Throughout my final weeks at the school I have always been motivated by other teachers, and have had congratulations from teachers, students and parents on completing my final professional experience. I believe I have developed a healthy relationship with staff, students and parents in the school and that is why I was offered relief work at the school in Term 4 this year.
Throughout my experience I believe I was always punctual, because I came into school early and left school late to make sure I was prepared each day for my lessons. I also dressed appropriately each day, because I believe as an educator we have to set the standards and model good behaviour and attire for the students to see. I believe I have built a rapport with my colleagues and was able to communicate effectively with them. I was also respectful and presented a knowledgeable manner with any parent I came in contact with. I built good relationships with my students in the classroom and got to know them very well. I found that involving parents/guardians and the wider community is a very important process in the teaching profession. I am glad to have had a variety of different opportunities, to collaborate with parents and guardians from my school.
