Standard six: Engage in professional learning.
Why is standard six important?
As a newly graduated teacher, I believe that it is important to identify and plan professional learning needs. Newly graduated teachers should learn to engage in professional learning and improve practice, the classroom and education are always changing and evolving each year, so it is important that we as teachers are always open to new ideas and adapt to changes which can happen. Teachers need to always update their knowledge of what they teach, for example; I was lucky to have been involved in the new NAPLAN style of testing, in which students used iPads for testing instead of the traditional handwritten style. As a new teacher, it is important that I engage with colleagues in order to improve my practice, I believe that if I improve my practice and engage with my colleagues I am gaining more experience and ideas in order to improve my students learning. By always changing and adapting my style of teaching, I believe I will improve and become a better educator, and find different methods and strategies to suit my student's needs.
Action Plan 6: where to from here?
I have demonstrated a good understanding of the Australian Professional Standards for teachers. I have always conducted myself in a respectful and polite manner. I was always able to communicate in a professional manner with my peers/other Year 5 teachers who gave me feedback and provided me resources. I am always happy to be provided constructive critical feedback on my teaching because I believe that I can always improve on my teaching. I always take feedback as a positive and try and improve my pedagogy further, and use knowledge gained from talking with others to improve students’ learning.
Throughout my 10 week experience I attended a professional development day at Murdoch University. Professional development days occur at the start of each term as a way of improving the teaching process at schools. Throughout the professional development day, I learned to use a variety of engaging apps on the iPad from the apple team to use in my lessons. This professional development day was a great opportunity for me to learn and gather as much information from the session as possible to utilise towards my teaching method. I have also attended all the staff meetings throughout my 10-week experience, I found these sessions very useful, and it was a great way to engage with other teachers and hear their experiences in their classrooms.
